Emily and Sue

The Opera America-winning pop opera Emily and Sue by Dana Kaufman and Aiden K. Feltcamp honors the life and poetry of Emily Dickinson and Susan Gilbert, her sister-in-law. Letters between Emily and Sue, as well as Emily’s poetry, document an intimate relationship that was not socially acceptable or legally recognized in 19th-century Massachusetts. The plot of Emily & Sue extrapolates from Emily and Sue’s correspondence and explores themes of isolation, queerness, and forbidden love. Twila produced, directed, and starred in a new staged adaptation for the NYU New Studio on Broadway Free-play Festival in spring 2025.
